CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The steam in the wash-tent was almost unbearable. But Mia noticed that the two women, Holly and Barbie, didn’t seem to mind it at all. They worked cheerfully, telling stories about their time at Rising Sun.

Barbie, the older one, who was probably in her late fifties, said that she was one of the original members of the commune. She didn’t say anything about her old life, before Rising Sun, but she continually gushed about Brother Brent, and how he single-handedly put in motion the events that led to the building of this grand community. Holly, too, waxed poetic about their esteemed leader, but concentrated on their future plans.

“We’re not always going to wash clothes this way,” she said with a smile, sweat or water from the steam running down her temples as she scrubbed away on the washboard. “Brother Brent says that we’ll be constructing towers to harness the power of the wind and the sun, and then we’ll be able to use that energy to operate actual washing machines. So I think in the next years, our job will become easier.”

Barbie wagged a finger at her. “Not that we want to slack off.”

“Oh, no! I just think that if we had that, we’d have more time to do other things. There’s always so much to do around here. I’d love to plant flowers around Brother Brent’s house. He says he loves them.”

Barbie nodded. “That would be nice. Maybe we could do it as a surprise for him? The Sun Feast is coming up.”

“Oh!” Holly clapped her hands. “We should! I love the Sun Feast. Is the planning for the event already underway?”

“Sun Feast?” Mia asked.

Barbie nodded and leaned into Mia. “You’ll learn, Sister Danielle, to love the Sun Feast. It’s the day we all come together to celebrate our love for our fellow man. It’s really something special. And it’s happening in a couple weeks.”

Holly said, “It’s also Brother Brent’s birthday!”

Mia watched the two of them scrub, wondering if she should offer to help. Holly’s fingers were red and raw. “What happened to your hands?”

She laughed. “Oh, I just get a little over-excited with the scrubbing. Like Brother Brent says, cleanliness is the hallmark of a Rising Sun. We’re supposed to wash up at least five times a day, in the morning, before meals, and at night. It gets very dirty with all the dust here, as you might have noticed. So we have to stay clean!”

Mia looked down at her feet. They were already dirty due to the walk from the office to the wash tent. “That must be really hard.”

“You’ll get used to it,” Barbie assured her, struggling to lift a basket full of clothes.

“Let me get that!” Mia called, rushing to her side.

“Oh, no,” Barbie said, swatting her off. “Like Brother Brent said, you should relax for now. You’ll have plenty of time to get involved, later. But I appreciate it, Sister Danielle.”

They worked and worked until the sun had gone down. So much of the wash had been cleaned and folded, and yet there were still piles and piles to get to.
